Half Asleep
Via Pitchfork -
Toby and I have been working on this video for School Of The Seven Bells for what seems like forever. We shot tests back in LA in August (featuring both of us performing instead of the girls, which was hotter than you might think). The label finally gave us the greenlight in December. We both produced it; Toby directed it; I did the effects; we both cut it; and now it's officially been released. This should be the first in a series of videos we're going to be doing together, among other projects; we're throwing up a new shingle, as they say in the biz.
And now back to St. Nick, which Toby has been supervising the post-production for in my various absences. I just drove back to Dallas this afternoon to see how things are going. I'm sorta getting used to all this road-tripping....

Great work.
I have to ask, since you're the effects guy....how'd you do the roll-up transitions, the shaky transitions, and the sprocket-hole transitions? Me get jealous when me no understand.

I wish I could say that we did it all with A/B rolls on an optical printer...but in boring reality, the answer just involves a bunch of heavy After Effects compositions. That it made you scratch your head, though, does my heart a world of good!

Oh no, I figured as much--but were they AfterEffects templates? Pre-programmed effects?
The video really works--it's a concept that might get boring, but somehow never does, and of course it's a beautiful fit with the music. Pass my kudos on to Toby!
(And have fun at SXSW...so jealous. I would like to be in Austin.)

Also, do you know this site? They seem to get a fairly good amount of traffic. Send 'em the video!

They will be sent the video ASAP. Thanks!
Being the hands-on fellow that I am, I always make everything in After Effects from scratch. No templates here! I'm sure I waste copious amounts of time this way, but at least I can then sit back and feel a little more pleased with myself...
